My novel BOLL WEEVIL was heavily inspired by the people and stories from my hometown of Troy, Alabama.
This article appeared in the back pages of the February 1995 edition of GQ magazine. It tells the story of Wiley Sanders, a wealthy trucking magnate who built his empire in Troy. I remember it being a controversy in Troy, and something that people only spoke about in hushed tones. I’ve held onto my copy of the magazine for decades. I view it as an important piece of the history of my hometown, so I’ve scanned and am sharing it here, asserting Fair Use under the U.S. Copyright Act. Will gladly take down at the request of any copyright holder.
